Is it wrong that I feel so empty after I lost a chance that may have been just an illusion?

He might have heard, or sensed it. People's perceptions can be incredible, almost like instinct. Think about all of the math concepts that were developed out of logic alone. You don't need much physical evidence to figure something out when you have thinking skills and experience. On the other hand, even if he wanted to help, there probably wasn't much he could do, so I doubt that you "almost" got saved. Just realize that there are good people out there that care and want the best for others, but you are the one that is in control of your fate. People can only help so much. You have to be the one to help yourself.
