How do you make conversation with a guy you JUST met?

So I was at a relatives birthday party and I ended up playing a game of horse with this very good looking italian guy. It was just me and him shooting baskets. Unfortunatly, it seemed like neither of us was really too good at making conversation, as their was quite a bit of silence. I'm just wondedring, for future reference, what are good things to say as a girl who is with a guy she just met?
